31

by Roger on Nov.19, 2007, under Life

In my opinion the birthday milestones in a person’s life are:

16 – you can get your license to drive
18 – you can vote, and if I’m not mistaken you can also get drafted
21 – you can drink legally in the US
30 – you’re not a kid anymore

after that any birthday that marks a decade is a reminder that your body is old even if mentally you never left your teens.

I once had someone tell me a theory on people and their mental age. According to the theory your mind/personality would get ‘stuck’ at the age of when you begun having kids.

My 31st birthday was this past Saturday and I realized the statement might not be far off from the truth. For me the age I got stuck at was somewhere in my twenties (around the age when I met my wife).

In my mind I’m still the guy in the picture:

In reality I’m the guy that is responsible for this child:

Natalia Jersey

Just in case I wasn’t feeling down enough my wife gave me this shirt as a birthday present:

Even what I read has changed. I’d love to read Steve Souders’ book “High Performance Web Sites: Essential Knowledge for Front-End Engineers“, instead I’m reading Kim West’s “Good Night, Sleep Tight: The Sleep Lady’s Gentle Guide to Helping Your Child Go to Sleep, Stay Asleep and Wake Up Happy“.

I guess I really am a grown up now!
